I’m Walkin’ Here!
Let’s get personal, shall we?
I love writing. I’ve written since I was old enough to hold one of those really thick pencils, you know, the kind that you had to sharpen forever while the rest of the class listens to you and either glares, laughs, or decides to get in line. It’s something I’ve always been passionate about. Writing is something that’s given so much to my life.
However, as with most things, it also has some drawbacks.
The biggest thing is sitting at a desk all day and only moving for a few minutes at a time. My imagination gets a workout, but my body? Not so much.
That’s changing this year – in the next couple months, in fact. Myself, along with a couple other writers, have decided to take our health a bit more seriously and have dedicated time to tackle a walking challenge. I’m actually pretty excited, to be honest! I was part of the cross country team in high school, but ever since I worked the desk job, my activeness became stagnant. Doing a challenge gives me motivation to stick with it. I’ve only been at it for three days, but I can say that I’ve learned one thing: I hate the treadmill!
Even though it’s cold and snowy in Maine, I love seeing my progress as I walk somewhere. The crisp air, the sounds of nature, and the fact that no matter how far I walk, I’ve also got to make it back home! All of those things can only be felt if I physically walk outside my home. The treadmill just makes me sweaty and annoyed because there’s nothing to see! (Mmm. Sweaty. Reminds me of my WIP!)
Anyway! Back on topic – I’m looking forward to reclaiming some active time to get outdoors and feel less isolated in my home office. I read that walking is good for the creative brain, and already I know that’s true. Something about getting the blood pumping gets my imagination going. And there’s a lot that I want to creatively accomplish!
Maybe I’ll document some of my journey on Instagram. It’s not particularly exciting yet, with all the snow we’ve gotten this week, but who knows? Maybe I’ll see something eye-catching on my journey one of these days. Already I’m thinking about a few scenes in the next Thunder Falls book where the boys get out into nature and enjoy each other’s company.
Now that the physical labor for the day is checked off, it’s back to the desk for me! I hope you all have a great end of January, and a cozy start to February!
